Trollope, Anthony: The Two Heroines of Plumplington and.

Trollope, Anthony - The Two Heroines of Plumplington and Other Stories. Folio Society, 1981, 1st thus. Matches the Original Barsetshire series binding but with variations; please note that this does not match the Society's 'Complete Works of Trollope' binding. 'All the world may not know that Plumplington is the second town in Barsetshire... it has a population of over 20,000 souls and three separate banks...' The Two Heroines of Plumplington ('It sounds like a vulgar farce,' grumbles Mr Greenmantle, father of one of the heroines in question) has only the most tenuous links with Trollope's famous Barchester novels, but, besides being a delightful story in its own right, it highlights most beautifully the variety of settings with which the other stories in this collection are endowed. Trollope was a great traveller: 'the banging, jolting, bustling adventures of train, steamer, diligence and mule-back set him banging and jolting in response.' His globe-trotting experiences are seldom to the fore in his novels, but in his short stories they have starring roles - Vienna, the Tyrol, drama on the Cornish coast . . . even a most embarrassing incident with a mustard plaster in a Paris hotel. Strong characters complement these colourful backgrounds: take, for example, the perversely amusing Lotta Schmidt who marries Herr Crippel 'all because of the zither', or wistful Mrs Brown whose 'soul craved the Christmas festivities of holly and mince pies', or implacable Mally Trenglos, defending her rights to the foreshore seaweed, or, finally, a portrait perhaps of Trollope himself in John Pomfret, the archetypal Englishman abroad, who, as John Bull on the Guadalquivir, mistakes a Spanish duke for a matador . . . (Folio Society). 9" x 5¾", 276pp, quarter red cloth with dull-pink paper sides printed with a repeat pattern, gold blocked spine lettering and decoration, hardback. Illustrated with monochrome drawings by Peter Reddick, within the text. Slightly sunned spine; fine; NO slip-case.
