Ever since it first appeared in 1966, Dickens' London has been one of the most popular titles ever published by the Society. In this companion volume, drawn, among other sources, from The Uncommercial Traveller, Pictures from Italy and his letters, Dickens describes, in his own inimitable way, all the delights and difficulties incidental to his frequent travels through France, Italy and Switzerland. It is with a special eye for 'all things counter, original, spare, strange', with an instinctive appreciation of the vagaries of everyday character, and sometimes with a dreamlike disregard of mundane chronology that he evokes his impressions of places and people from Naples to Lausanne and from Boulogne to Rome. Even when pleasure gives place to pain - Dickens was a martyr to seasickness - his powers of evocation still reign supreme, as in the account of his hair-raising ascent of Vesuvius and of the occasion when, returning home, he was involved in a major train disaster and death touched him on the shoulder.
