Dickens, Charles: Pickwick Papers.

Dickens, Charles - Pickwick Papers. Folio Society, 1981, 1st thus.

Samuel Pickwick, with his shiny bald head and fringe of hair, his little round spectacles, tights, tails and gaiters, is an instantly familiar and endearing figure. Initially he was not Dickens' creation at all, but that of Robert Seymour, Pickwick's first illustrator, and no one since has dared to draw him differently. Seymour was also responsible for the original idea behind The Pickwick Papers, but Dickens took over the project with his usual boundless confidence and made it his own, lock, stock and barrel. The first episode came out in 1836, 'a novelty in the monthly innumerables', and said the Spectator, 'capitally hit off'. The first in an increasingly formidable collection of novels, The Postliuuiuiouus Papers of the Pickuvick Chub still contains some of its author's most memorable characters and hilarious incidents; for Samuel Pickwick is the presiding chairman of the club, and appoints members Tupman, Snodgrass and Winkle as a corresponding society to report to it on their sundry journeys and adventures. For example there is the visit to Dingley Dell in which the rascally Mr Jingle elopes with Mr Wardle's sister and is caught; and the dramatic misunderstanding between Pickwick and his landlady which resuilts in the famous action Bardell v. Pickwick for Breach of Promise . . (Folio Society).

9½" x 6¼", 766pp, quarter bottle-green cloth with orange paper sides printed with a repeat pattern in brown, black-blocked spine title-panel, gold blocked spine lettering and decorateion (original Society Dickens series binding), hardback. Illustrated with monochrome drawings within the text by Charles Keeping.

Probably unread; spine slightly sunned (average for this edition); fine; complete with very good plus (minimal shelf-wear) original slip-case; still has its sign-up a new member post-card.
