Green, Candida Lycett: Betjeman's Britain.

Green(ed.) Candida Lycett - Betjeman's Britain. Folio Society, 2000, 2nd impression.

John Betjeman, Britain's Poet Laureate from 1972 until his death in 1984, travelled extensively throughout the country during his long life. His observations are everything a reader of his poetry would expect: in a crisp, unfussy style, he draws out the unique local beauty of every landscape, and his enthusiasm. charm. and playful humour cast each location in the light of a summer's day. There are the Regency crescents and shady quays of Exeter; Shrewsbury's hidden clusters of Georgian gardens; the Gothic spires of Oxford; the wildly exuberant granite architecture of Aberdeen, and many other sights from across the nation, be they the capital's most famous attractions or the countryside's wellkept secrets. Betjeman was fascinated by the history of his country and these very personal accounts of its cities, towns and villages are as full of their lore as they are of his irrepressibly amiable personality. Our new collection, which also includes a selection of Betjeman's poetry has been selected and introduced by Betjeman's daughter, Candida Lycett-Green, and is illustrated with the work of some of Britain's best photographers of the Forties and Fifties.
